Finding Peace in the FOMO era -- Navigating the Student Life-Academics Balance and Finding Self Acceptance

Nahee Hong

In a world perpetually plugged into the digital realm, the fear or missing out (FOMO) has become an omnipresent force, particularly for students striving to “have it all.” The constant exposure to social media of other’s lifes creates a sense of inadequacy -- especially when we’re constantly seeing 14 year old K-Pop Idols making enough money to pay our rent. This creates the belief that everyone else is doing something better than we are, more successful, and leading to more “fufilling” lives that we all want in on.

However, Amidst the noise of social media and societal pressuers, a counter-trend is emerging -- one that champions the idea of “protecting your peace” This movement encourages individuals to prioritize their personal values and well-being above the allure of popularity or external validation.

At it’s core, protecting your peace is about cultivating a sense of inner calm and contentment, regardless of external circumstances. Its about learning to say no to commitments and ideas that don’t align with your values or contribute positively to your well being (I’ve discussed this further in a previous blog, click here!)

For students, navigating the pressures of academic performance, social expectations, and personal growth can feel like walking a tightrope. The fear of missing out on opportunities, experiences, or social interactions can lead to a constant state of anxiety and discontentment. However, by embracing the principles of protecting your peace, students can reclaim control over their lives and find a sense of balance and fufillment.

Protecting your peace isn’t about isolating yourself from the rest of the world, deleting all your social media accounts and becoming a nun for the rest of your life (unless you feel called to do so.) Instead, it’s about setting boundaries, practicing self-care, and honoring your needs and desires. It’s about that true happiness and fufilment that you get from yourself and your own life, rather than an external source of validation from others.
